The International Potato Center (CIP) generates a lot of valuable research and is committed that the world uses our findings to improve livelihoods and nutrition and uses our datasets to generate additional findings. Our goal, in alignment with the CGIAR policies, is to be fully Open Access at the end of 2018.
On 28-29 September 2018, an Open Access workshop was held in Nairobi, Kenya, led by members of the Research Informatics Unit (RIU), Knowledge Resources Center (KRC) and the Sweetpotato Action for Security and Health in Africa (SASHA). The workshop had 22 participants (16 Male and 6 Female).
The workshop was targeting key research staff across CIP-Sub-Saharan Africa programs. The primary goal of the workshop was to help participants understand the key practices and procedures for OA and Research Data Management. The intended outcome was to have curated datasets from the last five years ready to be published in Dataverse. Participants brought research datasets from their projects to clean and document in the workshop. In opening the workshop, Dr. Jan Low, the SASHA project manager noted: “We all know about Good Agricultural Pratices (GAP); but as researchers we need to be knowledgeable about and advocates of Good Data Practices (GDP). By collecting quality data, analyzing it, reporting findings in a timely fashion and sharing data with the world, you enhance your reputation as a researcher. A rising GDP attracts more investment!”
