African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development (AJFAND) publishes Special Issue devoted to biofortification

The African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development (AJFAND) has published a Special Issue devoted to Biofortification. The Special Issue is a culmination of an idea mooted by Dr Howarth Bouis, one of the four 2016 World Food Prize laureates and features 17 chapters.

In her forward, the AFJAND Editor-In-Chief, Hon. Prof. Ruth K. Oniang’o, pays tribute to Dr. Bouis for his efforts to bring this Special Issue to fruition, and for his invaluable contribution to biofortification. “From 1993, Howdy was determined in his belief that biofortification could be a huge answer to world hunger and micronutrient deficiency problems,” she writes.

She also emphasizes the potential contribution of orange-fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP) in addressing the cycles of drought and hunger that are still being experienced in the Horn of Africa. “The good thing about the orange-fleshed sweet potato is its judicious use of water. So, it does better than many tubers in limited rainfall. This point was seriously emphasized at a recent CIP (International Potato Centre) meeting I attended in Kisumu,” she writes, making reference to the annual meeting of the OFSP Marketing, Processing and Utilization Community of Practice that took place from 1-3 March 2017.

This Special Issue on Biofortification contains valuable lessons for policy makers, researchers/scientists, farmers, donors, practitioners, consumers, private sector and job seekers. It demonstrates that through collective action, billions of the world’s hungriest people can access affordable food-based micronutrients.
