SPHI Brief 2012: Integrating Orange combating Vitamin A deficiency in maize-based food systems in Zambia

In Zambia, maize is the most important crop. This shows a low diet diversity usually accompanied by high levels of stunted growth and prompt for food crops diversification. This brief updates on the progress of integrating orange to combat Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in Zambia. Briefly, three pro-vitamin A rich OFSP varieties selected based on farm trials, and advanced for further testing, multiplication and demonstration. In conclusion, identification of potential farmers for training as quality vine multipliers and host of demonstration plots is the next step.
