This presentation outlines SP breeding platform in Eastern and Central Africa such as status of SP breeding, challenges and future activities to develop SPVD resistant varieties. Virus infestation and almost lack of clean planting materials are major limitations in Ethiopia. Kenya faces inadequate funds, drought, and skilled personnel while Uganda experiences inadequate resources such as internet, phones, faxes, power, No virologist and socio-economist. Future activities aim to improve germplasm and disseminate OFSP technologies in Kenya, in Uganda development of SPW and virus resistance varieties is main focus. Rwanda targets to develop high yielding variety in different zones and promote OFSP technologies and Ethiopia needs to select SP clones adaptable and acceptable in major SP growing zones. Also generate and promote OFSP processing technologies.
