Globally Vitamin A (VA) deficiency poses great risk for pregnant women and is a leading factor to early childhood deaths. Despite VA importance to health, many low income livelihoods experience limited access. Most poor communities depend on farming hence enrichment of sweetpotato with β-carotene through conventional breeding would increase access to VA. This presentation explains the nature of quantitative inheritance by diallel analysis. Most interesting finding are that genotypes are significant and provide selection opportunity. However, sweetpotato is heterozygous hexaploid and with highly significant GCA and SCA ratios therefore crossing can cause gene break down than in the progenies.
