DEVELOPMENT OF SWEETPOTATO VARIETIES FOR DUAL PURPOSE USE THROUGH PARTICIPATORY BREEDING IN RWANDA

This work focuses on sweetpotato breeding for dual application with aid of farmer participation in Rwanda. The major target is to release new varieties such as Orange fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP) clones with farmer desired traits such as, high yielding, early maturing, good storability, resistant to SPVD and Alternaria and can also be utilized as animal feed especially cows. Accelerated breeding scheme (ABS) involving controlled crosses and rapid selection has potential to produce clones genetically identical to original seed plants.
