Sweetpotato Breeding for Southern Africa

Southern Africa nations require SP varieties tolerant to drought, high β-Carotene level and good culinary qualities. This presentation reports an update of ongoing community breeding practices within Malawi, Zambia, Madagascar, Mozambique and South Africa. Accelerated breeding schemes (ABS) activities are being relied on for new breeding lines multiplications in screen houses. The ABS is expected to release 10 more drought tolerant OFSP varieties. Production of clean planting materials and virus indexing has been boosted with installation of thermotherapy machine for virologist and post-harvest team and also screen houses for grafting study. Within the region more activities will breed lines evaluations, trait characterization, training CBO, processing production and developing recipes.
