The Problem

Nearly 20 percent of children under five years of age have vitamin A deficiency (UDHS 2006).  Another main component of micronutrient malnutrition is iron deficiency anemia.  Prevalence of anemia among children under five year of age is estimated at 73 percent (UDHS 2006) and a proportion of this is due to iron deficiency.  Coverage of vitamin A supplementation among children is 36% and coverage of iron supplementation for pregnant mothers is about 60% (UDHS 2006).
